At Jackson Eye Care, we use the most advanced technology to provide the best care for our patients.  We offer:

• Digital Retinal Imaging – High-Resolution photos of the interior surface of the eye for the diagnosis of conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
• OCT – Optical Coherence Tomography is effectively “optical ultrasound” imaging which provides cross-sectional images of the eye.  OCT is useful in the diagnosis of macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, retinal disease, etc.

Insurance, Billing and Co-Pays

We accept most vision plans and many medical insurance plans. Because we work with both, it helps to know which one your exam will be billed to and why.

Routine eye exam: billed to your vision plan

If you’re coming in for glasses or contacts and you have no medical eye conditions, we bill your vision plan. Your vision plan’s exam co-pay, if it has one, applies.

Medical eye exam: billed to your medical insurance

Your exam is billed to your medical insurance if:

• you have a condition that affects your eyes, such as diabetes, glaucoma, or macular degeneration
• your doctor finds one of these conditions during your exam
• you’re coming in for a medical concern, such as eye pain, redness, flashes, floaters, or a sudden change in vision

What you may owe

When your exam is billed to medical insurance, your medical plan’s co-pay, deductible, or co-insurance applies. These are often different from your vision plan’s co-pay and can be higher.

If you also need a glasses or contact lens prescription during a medical exam, there is a $45 refraction fee. Some medical plans cover it, but that depends on your plan.

An example

You schedule your yearly exam through your vision plan. During the exam, your doctor finds early signs of glaucoma. Because the visit now includes diagnosing a medical condition, it is billed to your medical insurance, and your medical plan’s co-pay or deductible applies. Your doctor will try to let you know during the exam. If not, our front desk staff will explain at checkout.

What to bring to your appointment

• Your vision insurance card and your medical insurance card, even if you expect to use only one
• A photo ID
• Your current glasses, and your contacts or the contact lens box
• A list of the medications you take
• Payment for any co-pay, deductible, or fees due at your visit. We accept cash, card, check, and tap-to-pay.

Common questions

Can I use my vision plan instead of my medical insurance?

Yes. If you’d prefer to use your vision plan and your appointment date is eligible under that plan, we’re happy to bill it. When a visit involves a medical diagnosis, though, most vision plans don’t allow us to bill them for the exam. In that case, the exam is billed to your medical insurance. Your vision plan can still cover routine benefits, such as your refraction or your glasses and contacts.

I don’t have insurance. What will my exam cost?

Our Annual Well Care Eye Exam is $124 and includes your eyeglass prescription and a 200-degree Optos retinal scan.

If you wear contact lenses, a contact lens evaluation and fitting is added to your exam. The fee depends on your fit history with Jackson Eye Care:

• $49 if you’ve been fitted for contact lenses at Jackson Eye Care within the last 3 years
• $79 if it’s been more than 3 years since your last fitting with us, if you were last fitted at another office, or if you’re new to contact lenses

This makes sure your prescription, fit, and eye health are fully up to date.
